Santa Jeremy Ono is a Canadian-American immunologist and one of the most distinguished academic leaders of his generation. Born in Vancouver in 1962 to Japanese immigrant parents, he grew up in a household that placed the highest value on academic excellence and intellectual pursuits.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences from the University of Chicago, followed by a doctorate in experimental medicine from McGill University. He went on to teach at Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and University College London, before a steady rise through university leadership — serving as President of the University of Cincinnati, then the University of British Columbia, and finally the University of Michigan. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In August 2025, he was appointed President of the Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford and Global President of the Ellison Institutes. He also holds a professorship in ophthalmology and immunology at the University of Oxford.
